The Louisville Triple Crown of Running is "Green": Series Continues to Increase Commitment to Sustainable Policies

(Louisville, Kentucky (February 23, 2012)) The 36th annual Louisville Triple Crown of Running℠ presented by Novo Nordisk is again increasing its sustainable and environmentally friendly policies for its Spring 2012 events. By working together with its sponsors, support organizations and charity, the Triple Crown has implemented and expanded green practices including:

  • utilizing EMS/volunteers riding bikes throughout the races
  • providing accessibility to the Rodes City Run 10K event by public transportation
  • being an early-on provider of online registration, results and web page publications, reducing the usage of paper
  • providing a variety of fruit and bars from ValuMarkets
  • distributing fresh-baked bagels from Panera Bread
  • offering fresh-brewed coffee from Heine Brothers Coffee

Another valued sponsor, Waste Management, Inc., has cardboard waste and recycling boxes for special events such as the popular road race series.

This year, each race in the series will have at least two green water stops including finish line stops with thousands of gallons of Louisville pure tap®. Kelley Dearing Smith, Louisville Water Company spokesperson, says, "With the use of biodegradable cups along with bottles, runners will enjoy pure tap® in a more environmentally-friendly way."

Rumpke Consolidated Companies, Inc., another long-time Triple Crown sponsor, provides portable restrooms that are made from recycled plastic and utilizes toilet paper made from recycled content. Rumpke has been "green" since 1932.

The Triple Crown race committee is also privileged to continue to work with their family of sponsors including Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine, Cox Media Group (Lite 106.9,107.7 The Eagle and Q103.1), Fleet Feet Sports, Bee Line Courier Service, BB&T, Louisville Stoneware, Chick-fil-A, Fast Signs, Sun Tan City, LEO Weekly, YMCA of Greater Louisville, PowerAde, WHAS-TV and Thrifty Truck Rental.

About the Louisville Triple Crown of Running℠
The Louisville Triple Crown of Running℠, which consists of three road races of varying distances, has a long-established partnership of generosity with the Crusade for Children. In 2011 nearly 30,000 runners participated in all three races, leading to a record attendance for each event. As a result, a record donation of $160,243 was made to the WHAS Crusade for Children, nearly a 20% increase over 2010. The Triple Crown series is proud to be ranked 3rd of all civic organizations that donated to the 2011 Crusade. To date, the Truiple Crown has contributed more than $866,000 to the Crusade since 1984 and we anticipate breaking the $1Million mark in 2012!
